The German government poured cold water on Greek hopes of support for a mammoth photovoltaics project named Helios that would see the installation of a solar panel system in Greece and the power produced transmitted to Germany.

"There will be absolutely no support to Greece via German electricity clients," was the statement by a German Finance Ministry spokesman on Monday in response to a report in news magazine Der Spiegel suggesting that the European Union wishes to have favorable German regulations in the renewable energy sector extended to Greek firms, provided they supplied electricity to the European network.

"That would mean German consumers would have to pay for the reconstruction of the Greek economy," Spiegel wrote.
