Walking along Bourke Street mall, you might have noticed David Jones’ personalized Mary Katrantzou window, with flowing silk dresses with large postage stamps. Not a coincidence.

The Greek born UK designer is in Melbourne as the guest of honour at the Melbourne Fashion festival and showcased her Spring/Summer 2013 line on opening night. Famous for her striking silhouettes, luxury influences and greek symbols lining her clothing, Katrantzou has made a name for herself early in the competitive industry.

She now boast 250 international stocklists including, Colette, Selfridges, Barneys and David Jones. Her designs are so sought-after that she’s collaborated with big names such as Atelier Swarovski, Longchamp, and created a line for Topshop.

This time, Katrantzou’s collection is inspired by vintage postage stamps and obsolete banknotes and wowed audiences at the sold out opening night.

Katrantzou says her new collection has taken her a step forward from her other collections.

“I wanted to play with unique fabrications that created new textures and aesthetic qualities,” she says.

“It’s a step forward from what we have done before, so I hope people enjoy it and take pleasure from wearing it”.

Katranzou also spoke at the festival’s business seminar.
