Harry Kewell to Victory?
Peter Kokotis looks at the rumours surrounding Kewell's signing to Melbourne Victory
Harry Kewell ponders his next career move.
If ever the A League needed a shot in the arm after the news 2010 MVP Marcos Flores of Adelaide United was leaving for a lucrative contract in China, another top line player lost to one of the top leagues in Asia.
Rumours are strong Australian superstar Harry Kewell may sign a complex multi million dollar contract with A League power house Melbourne Victory. Many believe this is a match made in heaven. Kewell at 31 years of age is still playing well enough to coax the famous Victory fans back on board after a 30 per cent drop in memberships over the last two seasons. The Melbourne sporting landscape, whilst hugely competitive with a saturated market of rival codes, has the capacity to respond to one of the greatest Australian players of all time. Kewell is a special talent, a man who once commanded the iconic number 7 shirt of Liverpool Football club, a shirt given to only the very best custodians in honour of club legends Kenny Dalglish and Kevin Keegan. Only injury stopped him from fulfilling a great legacy at Liverpool yet he has a Champions League and FA Cup medal from his time there.
At his very best he was one of the best left sided players in Europe. He still has so much to offer and many are hoping he can finish his career in Australia, his country where he has only played youth club football. Whatever allegiance you may have with any club all Melburnians are keeping a keen eye on proceedings waiting for the announcement that Harry Kewell will be playing his trade in Melbourne next season. We can almost already hear the Victory supporters singing to the famous 1976 hit song from Boney M, Daddy Cool, " Harry, Harry Kewell, Harry, Harry Kewell".
