The weekend’s action in the Greek Basket League was dominated by the first win this season for Maroussi and the injury to Panathinaikos forward Mike Batiste, who may miss the Cup Final on March 10.

Leader Olympiakos edged ever closer to clinching the top spot in the regular season with an emphatic 73-55 win at KAO Dramas on Sunday, to stay one win ahead of Panathinaikos. The Greens had beaten PAOK 85-65 at home on Saturday, but Batiste twisted his ankle and is now doubtful for next Saturday’s final against the Reds.

“I can’t miss the final,” he reportedly told Panathinaikos assistant coach Dimitris Itoudis just after his injury. AGO Rethymnou scored a significant 77-76 win at Panionios that secured it a top-six finish for the Cretan club’s best ever season. This was by far the weekend’s most exciting match, decided in the last seconds. Yet the big news of the weekend was the first win for Maroussi after 18 defeats, as the northern Athens club saw off Peristeri 58-52 away even though it has been mathematically relegated and some of its best players have already left due to its financial problems. In other games, Kolossos Rhodes beat Ilisiakos 64-48 at home and Aris thrashed Kavala 78-57.

The next round of games will take place on Wednesday, March 7.
