Melbourne is renowned in Australia as being the capital of food and coffee so it’s only fitting it would become the home of the hit reality tv series MasterChef Australia.

The premier of Victoria, announced the decision by Network Ten and Shine Australia to bring the foodie series to Melbourne and Victoria.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher said that: “Melbourne and Victoria is the food and wine capital of Australia and we believe MasterChef will only add to this reputation, as well as make a significant economic impact to the state through increased visitor numbers.

“Chefs George Calombaris, Gary Mehigan and former creative director of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival Matt Preston have been iconic figures in establishing Melbourne as Australia’s premier food and wine destination and we are pleased to be able to facilitate them ‘coming home’ and helping to showcase Melbourne and its regions to the world.

Ms Asher said Masterchef would be a great addition to Victoria’s tourism and major events calendar and would promote Melbourne around the world.

MasterChef Australia will begin filming the 2013 season at Melbourne Showgrounds next year.
