Legendary Greek singer and the artist responsible for the revival of Greek rembetika Dimitris Mitropanos, was laid to rest on Thursday.

His death left not only Greece but everyone he touched in the world in a state of shock. He was only 64.

Mitropanos was one of the singers responsible for taking Greek laika music to the world and his voice - one of the most recognisable in Greek music - was adored by all that heard it.

He died on Tuesday from after suffering pulmonary edema caused by a heart attack.

Mitropanos' career spanned over 40 years. He was known for his smooth delivery and mild manner.

In his time, he worked with Greece's most respected composers such as Mikis Theodorakis and Giorgos Zabetas.

He was born on April 2, 1948, in a village outside Trikala in Thessaly, and began working as a singer after moving to Athens in 1964.
