The legendary Mirage is back and better than ever, with exceptional fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions… so the factory description goes. The Mirage is an inexpensive ( price range from $11,990 to $13,990) entry level vehicle which is aimed at young people who are venturing into the motor market for the first time. The car comes in three distinct models; the ‘ES’, ‘Sport’ and the top of the line model ‘LS’. All models are powered by the same lightweight 1.2 litre, three cylinder MIVEC 57kw petrol engine (‘Sport’ fuel consumption 4.6lt/100km) with a choice of a 5 speed manual or Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) option.
First impressions are always the most telling and on first getting into the driver’s seat of the (CVT) Sport version, I was surprised by the space available to both driver and passengers. The roomy interior was finished in anthracite with platinum grey plastic accent panels, clearly readable instruments and firm but comfortable cloth seats. The sports model came with 14 inch alloy wheels, colour coded rear spoiler and four speakers. Standard features included air-conditioning, power windows, trip computer, 60/40 split rear seat, single CD Bluetooth audio streaming sound system and steering wheel mounted phone and audio controls. Safety features included as standard equipment, front and side airbags /curtains, ABS, EBD, BAS, ASC and Hill Start Control (HSC) for models with the CVT.
Driving on suburban roads at the legal speed limit was quite a breeze as the engine and transmission worked in harmony without skipping a beat. Take off as expected with such a small motor was a little slow, but once up to speed the little car travelled well and went around corners nice and tight. The suspension over rough surfaces smoothed out the bumps and the brakes stopped the lightweight car, drama free. In conclusion, a well appointed, excellent, versatile and super economical everyday commuter car well worth the value for money.
