Committal hearing for Theophanous
The Melbourne Magistrate's Court set July 6 as the date for the commital hearing where a rape charge against Victorian MP Theo Theophanous will be heard.
Seven days have been set aside by the court for the commital hearing.
Theo Theophanous is charged with the alleged rape of a woman in his parliamentary office more than ten years ago.
The alleged incident happened on September 1988 after Mr Theophanous and his female accuser had a drink in the city.
Mr Theophanous, who says he is innocent, resigned from his Ministerial portfolio as soon as he was charged with one count of rape on Christmas Eve of last year.
The commital hearing will see the prosecution present their evidence before the court. The alleged victim, who is in her 40s and lives in Greece, will also give evidence. The evidence presented at the commital hearing will allow the magistrate to decide whether the case will go in front of a jury.
The embattled Greek Australian politician, who has not resigned from his parliamentary seat expressed his belief that he will be exonerated outside the court house.
“I’m confident the truth will come out in this case,” Mr Theophanous said to waiting reporters.
