Greek RSL on ANZAC Day
The Hellenic RSL Sub-Branch, as with other years, will march on ANZAC day, Saturday 25 April. The ANZAC day march will start at 9.00 am from Swanston St along St Kilda Rd to the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance.
The Hellenic RSL will begin marching at 12.15 pm from the corner of Russell and Flinders St, and we would like all our members, and generally any Greek persons to join us in the march.
The ANZAC day march will end at approximately 1.00 pm. All Hellenic RSL Members are welcome to attend light refreshments (mezedakia) at our Club rooms afterwards.
The word ANZAC (Australian New Zealand Army Corps) started in Gallipoli in 1915, with the two countries under the Commonwealth “British Imperial Force” who fought together against the enemy at the time - Turkey.
Since 1916 when the first ANZAC day march in Australia started, it has become the most important National day in Australia and New Zealand.
The ANZACS also fought together in the Second World War, in the Greek Campaign from 1940-41 and in the Battle of Crete. In the Korean War under the United Nations, the ANZACS were together, as well as during the war in Vietnam.
ANZAC day, also reminds us of the courage of our troops, the loyalty, commitment, sacrifice, inspiration, humour, and the bond that lasts forever.
