Hollywood is filled with great Greek minds, so naturally this year’s Oscars have a couple of Greek contenders.
The 86th Academy Awards will be the highlight of the awards season, with many Greek stars hitting the red carpet in March hoping for a coveted golden Oscar.
Greek American filmmmaker Alexander Payne has been recognised for his work on the film Nebraska, which has received six nominations, including Best Director, Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress. Fellow Greek Phedon Papamichael is also nominated for Best Cinematography on the film.
Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight, that was set in Messinia Peloponnese, has also received a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Greek French composer Alexandre Desplat received a nomination for Best Original Score for his work on Philomena and Alexandre Gavras, son of filmmaker Costa Gavras, was nominated in the Live Action Short Film Category, alongside Xavier Legrand, for Avant Que De Tout Perdre (Just Before Losing Everything).
