George Matoulas’ latest exhibition looks out Australia through the eyes of a visitor.
Entitled Our Place: Visiting the country we live in, Matoulas exhibits what we take for granted living in Australia, and looks at the way travellers perceive our nation through departure and return.

Matoulas, similarly, can evoke this experience in us, confronting us with alternatives to what we held to be true.
Curated by Victor Griss, this exhibition – drawn from the Deakin University Art Collection and featuring many recent acquisitions – examines symbols, contexts and narratives that have become part of the identity vernacular with artworks that challenge simple and self-congratulatory identities; sometimes contentious and challenging, sometimes playful and irreverent, but always revealing.

Our Place: Visiting the country we live in by George Matoulas is on at the Deakin University Art Gallery, Melbourne Burwood Campus, 221 Burwood Highway, Burwood, Vic, until Monday 16 May. For more information visit deakin.edu.au/art-collection
