Racially-motivated attacks are becoming more frequent and more violent, doctors working at Attica’s major hospitals told Kathimerini. “During every shift we treat six or more cases of beatings of foreigners,” an unnamed surgeon at Evangelismos Hospital said, adding that most victims were treated for bruises, abrasions and knife wounds.

The assailants, who allegedly attack in groups and are dressed mostly in black, cannot be identified accurately. However, victims say the attacks are unprovoked.

Kathimerini understands that a surge in assaults against migrants in the Thriasio district, west of Athens, is connected to far right Golden Dawn’s launch of a branch in the area.

“Since the party opened its [regional] office two months ago, incidents have doubled,” a physician at the Thriasio clinic said.

UNFORTUNATELLY THE HOME OF DEMOCRACY IS FALLING APART.
Racial attacks are not uncommon in Western Europe but have been uncommon in Greece - until recently. Golden Dawn has found fertile ground in the current Greek depression in mustering support for these cruel attacks. At the same time, Greek authorities including police and other agencies have done little to stop these attacks and even less to make life better for these immigrants. It is time that significant reforms be enacted in Greece in relation to foreigners living there. Greeks in Greece cannot simply ignore reality, immigrants living in Greece for over a year should be allowed to become permanent residents with the option of citizenship. They can then vote, secure representation and pay taxes accordingly. Those that are there as 'illegals' should be processed as rapidly as possible, thus allowing them the option to find housing, to work and so on. As long as refugees and asylum seekers have not legal status, they then have no protection. Another major issue is the need to conduct cultural training for Greeks, many of whom have over the last ten years become cultural chauvinists. The ones that need the most training and cultural awareness are the police – it is among the police that one will find many of Golden Dawn’s support. These victims of racial violence need to have their human rights protected and need to be able to prosecute those who attack them. In order to do so they need assurances from the police, the police cannot be accomplices to the fascistic Golden Dawn. Lambis SA
