More than 100 people turned out to show their support for the 6th Box Hill Hellenic Scout Group at its open day and crisis meeting last weekend.

The group, which has been in constant operation for 41 years, has been experiencing dwindling youth numbers over the past 18 months.

This, coupled with tiring leaders who have served the group for decades deciding it is time to retire, has put the group in jeopardy of shutting down.

Group Leader Kathy Douros said she was heartened by the show of support but the group is not out of the woods yet.

“Everyone came because they care,” she said.

“This has put the group back in people’s minds. I’m getting phone calls from people saying they don’t want the group to shut down and I’m hoping it will spark someone to put on a uniform.”

The day included a full program of activities for youth members and visiting children. There was a jumping castle, bridge construction activities, donut eating competitions and plenty of games.

Ms Douros said the open day should result in more youth members signing up.

“There are parents who want to bring their children, so we’re increasing membership there but we still need uniformed leaders,” she said.

There were expressions from several adults interested in becoming leaders but a more concrete commitment is required to ensure the group’s survival.
