The appointment of Sophie Mirabella as Melbourne University’s Public Policy Fellow is met with hostility among some students, with one group requesting her sacking.

The Campus Refugee Rights Club held a protest at the university this week in order to voice their anger at the appointment of the former Liberal MP.

The club has also written a letter to the Head of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences Adrian Little expressing their disappointment for the appointment of Ms Mirabella.

Club member Feiyi Zhang said on the ABC that the former Liberal MP and shadow minister is closely aligned with the politics of Praime Minister Abbott and his Coalition government and this can only be bad for students.

She said the group was particularly critical of views Ms Mirabella had expressed on refugees and Indigenous communities.

“She’s going to influence a whole new layer of students and people who are going into all areas of Australian society.

“We will continue to campaign until she is terminated from her position,” said Ms Zhang.
