Stylianos Pattakos, one of three military chiefs who brought down democratic rule in Greece back in 1967, has reportedly died in his home in Athens after a stroke. Pattakos had been the victim of a burglary last Thursday, with three armed robbers breaking into his house in Athens and stealing jewellery and medals while he was asleep.

The junta’s interior minister, who would have turned 104 next month was born on 8 November 1912, in the village of Agia Paraskevi in Crete.

After the return of democratic rule in Greece, Pattakos and the other three leaders of the coup were sentenced to death for high treason but their sentences were later converted to life imprisonment.

Makarezos and Pattakos were freed for health reasons and put under house arrest in the 1990s until their deaths.

The latter, who showed no regret for his actions during the junta is going to be buried in his place of birth today or tomorrow according to AFP sources.
