Jean Paul Gaultier loves Greece and visits Athens several times a year. He has been inspired by Melina Mercouri and shares strong friendships with Anna Vissi and Vicky Kaya.

A retrospective international exhibition dedicated to the French couturier is now on at the National Gallery of Victoria, organised by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with Maison Jean Paul Gaultier, Paris. It features more than 140 superbly crafted garments in addition to photographs, sketches, stage costumes, excerpts from runway shows, film, television, concerts and dance performances.

Fans can also see the first dress created by the designer in 1971 through to his latest haute couture and ready-to-wear collections, costumes worn by Kylie Minogue and Beyoncé and haute couture dresses worn by Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett. A special section is devoted to his Greek-influenced creations amongst other ethnic-inspired collections.

When: 17 October 2014 – 8 February 2015
Where: National Gallery of Victoria, 180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne, Victoria 3004
