Tighter control of online sports betting and a ban on promoting live odds at sporting venues and during event broadcasts, were some of the recommendations that came out of a federal parliamentary committee.
Chaired by Tasmanian independent MP Andrew Wilkie and pokie reformer, the joint Select Committee on Gambling Reform report was tabled yesterday. Mr Wilkie said betting on sport was proliferating and was now worth about $790 million a year.
The committee's deputy chair, Labor's Nick Champion said sports betting issues had crept into Australians' lives.
Another recommendation was that a national independent research institute be set up on gambling, the development of an educational campaign to hightlight the dangers of online gambling and tighter controls on credit betting.
