John Xypolotis faced court on Thursday over the murder of missing 17-year-old Cranbourne boy Gary Adams. On Friday, police discovered human remains at the man's Hughesdale property, but are yet to confirm if the remains are that of the teenage boy.

55-year-old Xypolotis, the teenager's former stepfather, was arrested with murder in St Kilda on Thursday. Xypolotis, wearing a striped white shirt and jeans, sat and listened intently during the hearing. The Hughesdale man made no application for bail.

The boy went missing from his home December 5 in 2003, and Xypolotis is accused of murdering him on that day.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen remanded Xypolotis in custody until August 2.

Homicide Detective Inspector John Potter told The Age last year that Gary's mother Jo-Ann had been tormented by her son's disappearance.

"We're asking anyone with information to come forward to help bring closure to Gary's family and friends, particularly Gary's mother Jo-Ann who has suffered through these seven years not knowing what happened to her son," Detective Inspector Potter said.
