The Cypriot President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou has accepted an invitation from the Hon Peter Slipper MP, Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Hon John Hogg, President of the Senate, for an official visit to Australia during February 6 – 12.

According to a statement form the High Commission of Cyprus to Australia, the visit is seen to bolster the already strong bilateral ties that Australia has with Cyprus and to reaffirm the relationship held by both countries.

The visit also gives Cypriots in Australia the opportunity for discussion over international issues that are of great importance between the two countries, such as exploring new ways to cooperate and work together, developing stronger financial ties, looking at importing and exporting goods from the countries and other international issues Cyprus faces.

During the week, Mr Omiou will visit Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney. In Canberra, he will meet with the Mr Slipper and Mr Hogg. He will also speak with the members of the Parliamentary Committee of Friendship between Australia and Cyprus.

His first stop will be Melbourne, where on Monday 6 February, Mr Omirou will meet with the Greek Australian media to inform them of the latest developments in Cyprus. He will also meet with the Cyprus Community of the Northern Suburbs, afterwards there will be an official ceremony at the Cyprus Community of Melbourne and Victoria where he will meet with members of the diaspora at 495 Lygon Street, East Brunswick.

Mr Omirou will be accompanied by Mr Demetrios Syllouris, Leader of the European Party; Mr Neofytos Constantinou, Parliamentary Spokesman of the Democratic Party; Mr Costas Constantinou, Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Health Affairs, Democratic Rally Party; Mr Georgios Varvana, Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Defence Affairs, MSD EDEK; Mrs Stella Mishiaouli – Demetriou, Deputy Chairperson of the House Standing Committee on Internal Affairs, AKEL – Left New Forces; and Mr Georgios Perdikis, Deputy Chairman of the House Standing Committee on the Environment, Green Party.
