If Glyfada didn’t have enough to offer locals and visitors already, now it also boasts its very own natural hot spring.
The Municipality of Attica recognised the thermal hot spring in the area of Aixoni; the namesake spring has been on the list of the local council for decades.
“The existence of hot springs in Glyfada had taken legendary dimensions. It has been a matter of debate for many generations, but no one has ever done anything to investigate the matter,” said local Mayor George Papanikolaou.
He applauded the Ministry of Tourism’s decision, and added that it will have many benefits, among them a boost in development and the creation of jobs.
The decision comes after the council of Glyfada ordered an examination of the Aixoni spring to assess and confirm its status as a genuine thermal spring.
“It is a development that creates a unique growth perspective, unprecedented in the history of the city,” said the mayor.
Hot spring waters are said to have healing properties, and can be effective against rheumatic diseases, which affect the joints and connective tissue, along with helping back pain and disorders affecting the nervous system.
Mr Papanikolaou urged the city to act on the momentum of the announcement, by launching a development plan using both national and EU funds.
