Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has been invited by Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit Moscow.

The invitation followed a congratulatory call from the Greek PM to Putin on Thursday following news of his victory in the Russian elections.

The call was then followed up by Putin to Tsipras to propose he visit Russia.

According to an announcement by the Kremlin, during the call the two leaders discussed their intention to further develop co-operation between their respective countries.

“We are pleased to note the strengthening of cooperation in the trade, economic and humanitarian field,” the announcement read.

They also touched upon “topical issues of European security and the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean”, with a particular emphasis on Turkey’s recent shift towards a more aggressive stance said a statement from the Greek government.
