Three more suspects have been taken into custody in relation to the attack carried out against Thessaloniki’s mayor Yiannis Boutaris over the weekend.

Among them is a 44-year-old police officer. According to Kathimerini‘s sources, he had his weapon confiscated in 2015 after failing the police force’s psychiatric evaluation, and was transferred to desk duty.

Along with the policeman, a 43-year-old shop owner, and pensioner aged 57 have been identified as suspects, with all three facing charges of verbal assault and disturbing the peace.

The 75-year-old mayor was attacked on Saturday during formal Pontian Genocide commemorations, where he received verbal slurs, and was thrown to the ground where he was kicked and punched.

As a result Boutaris sustained injuries to his head, legs, and back and was admitted to hospital where he remained overnight.

This week, three of four men arrested in relation to the attack were convicted on various charges over the attack with light sentences, and have been released from custody.
