Volunteers who have worked tirelessly to ensure Greek elders never feel alone or feel like they have no-one to talk to have been recognised for their service.

Not-for-profit aged care organisation Fronditha, honoured its 200-strong army of volunteers on 22 May for its annual Volunteers Recognition Ceremony at Merrimu Receptions in Murrumbeena.

Held during National Volunteer Week, the event showcased the truly selfless nature of many Greek Australians who have devoted their time to the elderly.

“It’s important to note that without volunteers Fronditha Care would not be what it is today,” Fronditha Care CEO George Lekakis said.

Fronditha Care’s president Nick Thodos acknowledged the unique environment the volunteers foster, “You make sure the environment in which our residents live in is warm, kind and Greek,” he added.

Volunteers at Fronditha Care come in all ages and contribute in different ways; they regularly visit the more than 400 residents in five aged care facilities across Melbourne and in Newcastle, NSW, while others visit people in their homes.

Many visit the elderly Greeks in other nursing homes or out in the community, and also help with senior citizen activity groups.

A special tribute was also paid to Elly Frangis, a volunteer with over 30 years service who is now a resident of Fronditha Care’s Clayton South facility.
