The Greek postal service ELTA has released a new series of stamps with a bee theme to commemorate World Bee Day.

As of 2018, the United Nations General Assembly has declared that 20 May will be an annual day to remind people of the important role that bees play in sustainable development, and also warn of their decline.

Aside from bees’ role in making beneficial products for human consumption such as honey, they also contribute significantly to the reproductive process of plants through pollination. Without this process, many plant species would cease to exist, impacting negatively on the greater environment and on the human diet.

The stamps were presented on Wednesday in collaboration with Beekeeping Environmental Society of Saronicos Island To Kentri.

Attending the launch were a number of local government officials and deputies, along with Alternate Agriculture Minister George Tsironis and Slovenian Ambassador Anita Pipan.
