Yorgos Lanthimos never stops experimenting and amazing audiences; it seems he is prepared to do it again, this time tackling a different genre.

The absurdist director returns to the 75th Venice International Film Festival (VIFF) with his new film, ‘The Favourite’, after seven years.

Last time the Academy Award nominee entered VIFF was back in 2011, when he Efthymis Filippou won the prize for Best Script for their acclaimed film ‘Alps’.

‘The Favourite’ has been dubbed a satirical period drama, it is placed in 18th century England and the original script is written by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara.

It features three main characters Queen Anne, Duchess of Marlborough Sarah Churchill and Baroness Abigail Masham, played by Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone respectfully.

In the dark and complex film, the aforementioned trio engage in a sexually charged fight to the death for the body and soul of Queen Anne at the height of the War of the Spanish Succession.

VIFF officially kicked off yesterday and will resume on 8 September when Lanthimos will present his new film competing for the Golden Lion award.

The film is set to hit US theatres at the end of next month and we can’t wait for it to come to Australia.
