A unique concert dedicated to the music of Mikis Theodorakis is set to take place in the Adelaide suburb of Woodville on Saturday.

Presented by the Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia, the concert will feature some of the most popular, beloved and significant songs and instrumental works of the seminal composer, who has been a pillar of Greek culture for more than 60 years.

Theodorakis has defined Greek music and culture. His compositions draw upon western music and his love of Greek Byzantine, folk and urban music. He has composed symphonies, operas (Medea, Elektra), cantatas (State of Siege), oratorios (Axion Esti), sacred music, chamber music, theatre music, ballet music (Antigone), film scores (Zorba The Greek, Serpico), and hundreds of beautiful song cycles (Epitaphios, Omiros, Mauthausen) set to the poetry of Greek and international writers such as Ritsos, Seferis, Elytis, Lorca, Behan and Neruda, which depict the everyday human experience.

His songs have been sung by Greek people from all over the world for many decades. They have also been anthems of the struggle of Greek people for social justice, democracy and freedom from tyranny.

The 2018 Odyssey Festival Tribute Concert to Theodorakis will feature virtuoso bouzouki-player Angelo Avramakis (Melbourne), and the voices of Tassos Bouyessis (State Opera, Australian Three Tenors), Anthea Sidiropoulos (Melbourne, Pearl Janis Joplin Show), Vasilis Ioannides (Harama, Notes) and Johanna Saltis (Themelia, Meraki), performing alongside a 14-piece fine music orchestra under the musical direction of Dr Demeter Tsounis.

The Tribute to Mikis Theodorakis will be presented on Saturday 3 November at the Woodville Town Hall (72 Woodville Rd, Woodville, SA) at 7.00 pm. Tickets $30.00 per person. For more information, call GOCSA on (08) 8231 4307.
