According to figures included in a study released by INSETE, the research arm of four tourism-related trade groups in Greece, it is Australian and Turkish tourists that spend the most during their holidays in Greece.

The study spanning from 2005 to the end of 2017 ranks Australian, American, Canadian, Swiss and Russian tourists according to their expenditure per visit.

Australian tourists visiting Greece, on average, spend the most per visit, while Turkish tourists top the list in terms of expenditure per overnight stay, naftemporiki.gr reports.

Based on the numbers for 2017, an Australian tourist has spent an average of 1,218 euro per visit; the amount has increased an 10.8 per cent since 2005.

Meanwhile, the average Australian tourist will stay in Greece about 12.8 days – the longest stay among nationalities.

Furthermore, in 2017 alone, over 324,000 Australian citizens arrived in Greece.

When it comes to Greece’s neighbours, Turkish tourists, it appears they spend the most per overnight stay and stay for approximately 3.3 days; the average expenditure per person amounts to 99 euros, for 2017. In Turkey’s case, expenditure had gone down since the crisis began with tourists spending over 100 euros back in 2005.

US arrivals also saw a record increase last year going from 557,000 in 2005 to 865,000 in 2017. and comprising 3.2 percent of the total.
