Two institutions in Greece have been nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award for 2019 among 40 international museum nominations.

First on the list appears the Kotsanas Museum of Ancient Greek Technology in Athens followed by Crete’s Museum of Ancient Eleutherna.

The two museums are competing alongside prestigious museums from around Europe dedicated to specialised subjects, such as the Antonina Lesniewska Museum of Pharmacy in Warsaw, the Mastola Radio & TV Museum in Lahti, Finland, and the British Motor Museum in Warwickshire in the UK. The winners will be announced in May.

The impressive Kotsanas Museum’s collection comprises of 150 permanent functional models and replicas of ancient Greek technological innovations, whereas guests also have the chance to experience guided tours and attend limited edition shows such as the highly recommended ‘Ancient War Machines’ running through December 31.

Meanwhile, the museum of Eleutherna is the first museum on the island dedicated to an archaeological site and is innovative in that its permanent exhibition is constantly being renewed with finds from the museum’s collection of older and new discoveries from the active excavation of the ancient city.
