An organic Greek olive oil has just been ranked first among 30 other countries at the annual World Ranking Evoo (EVOOWR) competition.
The ‘Majestic’ variety by Sakellaropoulos Organic Farming flavoured with lemongrass and tarragon is produced from olive groves near Mount Parnon and Mount Taygetos in Laconia, Peloponnese.
“This is a very important distinction, first for Greece itself, then for the Greek olive oil and then for us,” co-owner and chemical engineer Nikos Sakellaropoulos told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA).
“Last year we were ranked second with our ‘Syllektikon’ olive oil,” he added stressing the importance of this distinction with EVOOWR awards being based on a system first introduced by the World Association of Journalists of Wine and Spirits, in which each olive oil amasses points based on international competition awards.
For each category award the EVOOWR committee gathers rankings from 28 esteemed international competitions which include tastings of 9,522 samples from 30 countries.
In terms of production, Greece ranked third in 2018 just below Italy and Spain with the United States and Portugal completing the overall top five.
Greece made in the top rated oils of another special category, the Best Condimento-Flavored Olive Oil for 2018.
‘Laleli’ Flavored With Tea Leaves from Turkey came first, ‘Enzo’ Flavored Fresno Chili Crush from the US came second, ‘Delicious’ Truffle Flavored Olive Oil from Crete got third place and the ‘Lucero’ Flavored Mandarin Orange Agrumato also from the US came fourth.
