A photo posted recently on National Geographic’s Instagram account, capturing the Athenian skyline under a full moon and with Acropolis as a backdrop was guaranteed to vow audiences around the world.

Having attracted over 1.2 million likes, the impressive image earned a place among the magazine’s online community most popular photos for 2018.

National Geographic photographer, Muhammed Muheisen, took the picture on 22 December from a rooftop at the Greek capital during the last full moon of the year.

“The last full moon of 2018 rises above Propylaea, the monumental gate of the ancient Acropolis hill, next to the 2500 BC Parthenon temple in Athens, Greece,” notes the photo’s caption, credited to the 37-year-old Jordanian.

Muheisen, a two-times Pulitzer prize winner, uploaded a time-lapse video on his personal account showing him setting up the camera during the day to capture the stunning image.
