Greek Minister of Environment and Energy Giorgios Stathakis, has had a very productive meeting with executives of the gigantic American motor and energy company, Tesla.

According to an Athens News Agency report, Tesla’s representatives expressed their interest in launching “smart islands” and “energy islands” initiatives across Greece.

The main topics of the discussion were the reduction of dependency on fossil fuel, especially for islands not scheduled to join the mainland power grid in the coming years; and the gradual switch to Renewable Energy Sources (RES).

By making use of solar, water and wind power, Greece is considering switching to RES not only for environmentally ethical purposes but also to sustain and boost the economy of the islands, as such a move will signal a significant reduction in the cost of storing and producing energy.

This new approach has also been highlighted in the goals envisaged by the country’s National Energy and Climate Plan.
