Emma Stone revealed that Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos “never considered” an American actress for a part in the comedy biopic “The Favourite”.

Speaking to Vogue, she revealed that she had to plead her case in order to be given the role of Abigail Masham, the cousin of Lady Sarah Churchill (played by Rachel Weisz), whom she battles to become a confidante of Queen Anne (Olivia Colman).

“I was getting ready to do La La Land, Yorgos was like, ‘I’d never considered meeting an American for the part,’ so I basically begged.”

The begging paid off and Emma enjoyed entering the “crazy and funny and dark” world that was created in the film with three strong female characters.

The leads have all received Academy Award nominations. Colman is up for the Best Actress Oscar amd Emma and Rachel are competing against one another for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for their respective roles and Lanthimos has been nominated for Best Director. The film is up for a total of 10 nominations at the 91st Academy Awards ceremony which takes place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on 24 February.
