Greek Australian Con Samaras who shot his fiance, Tamara Turner while the pair were on the run was sentenced to 11 years on Friday.

The Melbourne man had met his fiance online in October and proposed within hours of chatting with her. She left her family to travel from Missouri in the United States in order to be with him.

The relationship went awry when Mr Samaras unintentionally shot Ms Turner in the abdomen during a late-night feud in their caravan while they were on the run from police following illegal firearms possession charges. The Missouri mother of two had posted four guns to his Melbourne address that she had procured from her ex-partners shop in the United States.

The bullet hit Ms Turner’s aorta and caused her to bleed to death. Mr Samaras tried to offer first aid to Ms Turner and, when he found that he could not revive her, abandoned her body on a bench outside Mildura Base Hospital giving nurses a false name before taking off.

When police officers found him, he lied to them. He claimed Ms Turner had accidentally shot herself and buried the gun.

Mr Samaras was sentenced to 11 years in prison with a non-parole period of eight years.
