Greek athletes have shown the world what they are made of during their performances at the 2019 European Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow. The final tally is four medals – 1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze.
Nikol Kyriakopoulou won the bronze medal in the women’s pole vault category on Sunday. The gold medal went to Russian Anzhelika Sidorova who won the event with a leap of 4.85 meters, though she competed as one of “Authorized Neutral Athletes” since Russia was officially banned. Holly Bradshaw came second with a 4.75 metre jump, followed by Kyriakopoulou at 4.65 metres in her second try.
A win by Miltos Tentoglou in the long-jumps managed to win Gold for Greece and the top score for 2019 for the young athlete who is two weeks shy of his 21st birthday.
In the women’s high jumps, Voula Papachristou jumped 14.50 metres, scoring her personal best, and coming behind Portuguese athlete Ana Pewleteiro who picked up gold with a 14.73-metre jump.
On Friday, Costas Baniotis had won second-place ranking in the high jump finals. He jumped 2.26 metres, coming behind Italian jumper Gianmarco Tamberi who cleared 2.32 metres. Andri Portsenko also cleared 2.26 metres and shared the second-place honours with Baniotis.
Reigning Olympic champion Katerina Stefanidi failed to defend her title and shared fourth place with Switzerland’s Angelica Moser.
Kostas Douvalidis finished fifth in a very competitive final of the men’s 60 metres hurdles, where he also performed his season’s best at 7.65 seconds. Cyprus winner Milan Trajkovic clocked 7.60 and won the gold in the category.
