Greek Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Terens Quick said that he was “shocked” when he heard the news of Australian Archishop Stylianos’ death while attending the Greek Independence Day function organised by the Greek Consulate on Monday night.

A moment of silence was held in the Archibishop’s honour.

Mr Quick expressed his condolences following the Nostos meeting with his Egyptian and Cypriot counterparts on Tuesday morning.

He said that despite problems over the years, His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos was always a “man of his word”.

“He will be with the Virgin Mary. We’ll hold onto the image of a religious leader who had strength but who knew when to stand back to unify rather than cause dissent,” he told Neos Kosmos.

He has already expressed his condolences to Archbishop Seraphim. “Tomorrow I’ll be in Sydney to see him sleeping from up close and light a candle near where he will be sleeping,” he said.
