Brisbane celebrated the Greek Independence Day holiday in its own special way.

A Divine Liturgy and Doxology was hosted by Father Dimitri Tsakas, Father Stavros Karvelas and Father G. Polytakis at the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George.

The Honourable Jim Raptis OBE and the President of the Greek Community of Saint George, Michael Anastas, along with presidents of different associations, such as Harry Bertsos representing the Hellenic RSL were present at the ceremony, where the church was filled to its full capacity.

After the service, wreaths were laid on the cenotaph at Saint George by the officials and all the parishes and associations of Brisbane as well as the Gold Coast. Buses then took everyone to Anzac Square for a memorial service and to lay wreaths on the cenotaph there.

Speeches were made by Jim Raptis, Jackie Trad, Deputy Premier of Qld, who was very complimentary; the Deputy Mayor of Brisbane, Adrian Schrinner and Michael Anastas.

Mr Anastas was pleased with the attendance and thanked everyone, while MC George Psaltis did a wonderful job performing his duties.
