The Greek Orthodox College of St Euphemia celebrated the latest addition to its building complex, which joins the two playgrounds of the school, provides a new big hall for assemblies and events and gives to the primary its own separate library.
“This is another milestone to the history of our institution. The College would like to acknowledge and thank the Federal, State and Local governments for their contributions towards this project”, said Peter Theo, OAM, President of the local Parish-Community and President of the Board of Governors of the school.
The new facilities were bought under the Federal Government’s program ‘Building the Education Revolution’.
The opening was conducted in the presence of Archbishop Stylianos, who conducted the blessing service.
Also present were, Daryl Melham, Federal Member for Banks who represented the Australian Government and the Minister for School Education Peter Garrett and unveiled the new plaque.
The School Choir lead the gathering in singing the Australian and Greek national anthems as well as the school song. Entertainment included the College dancing group, taught by Paroula Gkaleli-Thurban, who performed various Greek dances, with emphasis given to an ancient Greek dance in celebration of this year’s Olympic games.
Also the School band, under the direction of Mr Spanos, performed a variety of traditional Greek songs.
Guided by the President of the Board of Directors and Governors, Mr Theo, the School Principal, Mr Hirakis, the Director of the Primary School, Ms Xanthoudakis and the invited guests and members of the community enjoyed tours of the new Primary School library, multipurpose hall and outdoor learning area.
Other guest at the opening were: Consul General of Greece in Sydney, Vasilios Tolios, Ms Tania Mihailuk MP, Mayor of Bankstown Council Mr Khal Asfour, Mr David Buley, AIS Director, Finance and Administration and Manager BGA, Glenn Brookes Representing the Hon. Victor Dominello MP, Former NSW Attorney-General Mr John Hatzistergos, Bankstown’s Deputy Mayor, Allan Winterbottom, Bankstown’s Councillor, Alex Kuskoff and Mr Zogopoulos Representing the Hon. Jason Clare MP.
