It would seem all good things must come to an end. This was the case for the Hawthorn Spartans, who saw their extended winning streak from last season end at the hands of Old Carey.

The club knew from the start that they had their work cut out for them, going up against the finalist of the previous competition, and a team of great depth with the ability to switch players out on the fly. This made Hawthorn’s mission even more difficult, proving to be an insurmountable obstacle with Old Carey taking the lead from early on in the game.

To their credit, the Spartans never let the home side gain too much of an advantage and kept them under pressure throughout the game. But their efforts proved ineffective as the end saw Old Carey walk away with the win.

This loss could prove a valuable lesson for the Spartans, as they move ahead in the season, showing their players that they aren’t unbeatable and that there is plenty of competition waiting to take them on.

This Saturday they will return to familiar ground, as they take on Mazenod at Rathmine Reserve at 11.40 am.
