An aspiring young Greek-American filmmaker, Krystal White, has the vision, the screenplay, the director and the cast for her first short film, but like many struggling artists is missing the cash to get her project off the ground. Inspired by her life and the mythology of Greece, where she grew up, White’s semi autobiographical short Persephone will tell a story of forbidden love between a dancer and a piano player. The Los Angeles-based filmmaker has already secured the cooperation of award-winning Greek-Australian actor-director Louis Mandylor of My Big Fat Greek Wedding fame, as well as Lainie Kazan to co-star beside her. White, 28, was born in the United States to a Greek mother and American father, but was brought up in Greece, where she attended the American Community Schools of Athens. “Persephone will be a physically and emotionally demanding role for me… and I can’t wait to sink my teeth into it and bring this character to life,” said the filmmaker. “There aren’t words for how grateful I am… to the talented and passionate people who are already working hard to turn this beautiful story into a visually and emotionally captivating film. Greek-Australian actor and director Louis Mandylor is the energy that is driving this film forwards. He is also a wonderfully talented filmmaker, with award-winning projects under his belt. I am honoured to have him aboard as director, as my co-star, and as the mind who helped give birth to Persephone’s story.” As it stands, she is looking to raise $15,000 to fund the making of Persephone.
