Internationally-renowned economist Professor Yanis Varoufakis will present a lecture at the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria on October 15, exploring the Greek economic crisis and how it should be addressed.
Professor Varoufakis is an outspoken political economist and an active participant in debates on the global and European crisis.
From 2004 to 2006 he served as economic adviser to George Papandreou whose government he was to become an ardent critic of a few years later.
Varoufakis continues to be in high demand as a guest analyst on the economic crisis in Greece for international news media such as the BBC and CNN.
He is the author of The Global Minotaur, a Professor of Economic Theory at the University of Athens, as well as economist-in-residence at the Valve Software Corporation.
Varoufakis says there is no such thing as a ‘Greek Crisis’, rather that events in Greece reflect a wider global downturn.
In his lecture he will argue that the current situation in Greece give vital clues to understanding the general crisis in the European and global economies.
Studying these items carefully, says the Greek Australian professor who lives in Athens, is key to gaining a clearer picture of what needs to be done to prevent a new global recession comparable to that of 1930s.
