Former NSL powerhouse Marconi Stallions are enjoying a resurgence in both Cup and League competitions at present under coach Peter Tsekenis, and has re-affirmed its faith in Tsekenis’ coaching by extending his contract by three years.

Under Tsekenis’ guidance this season, the Stallions have already won the NSW Waratah Cup trophy, by defeating rival Sydney United 2-1 in the final last month.

On Wednesday evening, Marconi continued its winning ways, progressing through to the Rd of 16 of the FFA Cup for the first time, by defeating South Hobart 3-0 in Tasmania. Also playing his part in the Stallions success, is the coach’s 18 year old son, rising star striker Damian Tsekenis, who came on as a 70th minute sub against South Hobart and scored his team’s third goal, following on from a first half brace to Stallion’s skipper Marko Jesic.

Marconi’s cup win on Wednesday followed just days after the Stallions defeated Sydney Olympic 1-0 away from home in a league match, to continue the club’s late charge for finals football. The younger Tsekenis again impressed off the subs bench, producing an overhead assist for team mate Mitch Mallia’s winning goal.

As well as Marconi, several other teams won through to the Rd of 16 on Wednesday evening. Melbourne NPL club Hume City added the scalp of ACT club, Tigers FC to those of previous conquests Heidelberg United and Bentleigh Greens. City’s Mark Ochieng and Ben Bowler each scored in a 2-0 win.

Sydney United triumphed 5-3 in extra time against St George in a Sydney derby. United’s Yanni Perkatis thought he’d scored a late winner only for St George to send the match into extra time with a last kick equaliser. Tariq Maia and Michael Ruhs then scored extra time goals to send Sydney United through to the next round.

A-League teams Melbourne City and Central Coast Mariners became the first A-League teams through to the round of 16 with 3-1 and 2-0 away wins at Campbelltown City and Maitland respectively.
