Lithostone is versatile, durable and requires very little maintenance to keep the surface looking like new. It is gaining ground as a material of choice for kitchen and bathroom tiles and bench-tops; fast surpassing more expensive granite and marble in popularity.

Its advantages, compared to standard materials, have placed lithostone at the forefront of those creating their new home, states Lithostone Quartz Services (LQS) co-owner Madeleine Athanasiadis.

Ms Athanasiadis, along with her cousin Yiana Kalaidopoulos, own LQS and have a 30-year tradition in interior design. It was this experience that made them turn to the innovative new product: lithostone.

“Because the industry is changing and a lot of people were going off marble and granite we thought we would bring in our lithostone,” Ms Athanasiadis told Neos Kosmos.

“It’s easier to work with (when compared to other materials) and it’s more affordable. Additionally, it started to become trendy so we thought it would be a good idea to go with that.

“We started with the standard colours and now we’ve got a different range, from your colour-cutters to just the basics, to the middle range, so it varies to whatever colour you like.”

The benefits of lithostone are no secret, and Ms Athanasiadis thanks home reno shows for that.

“We’ve got the marketing behind it and it’s also got a lot more design shows like ‘The Block’ that are using more engineered stone. So we’ve had more customers inquiring about lithostone in the last couple of years. It’s out there and people know about it.”

Lesser known are some crucial considerations that need to be made for those wishing to invest in lithostone when designing their home.

“You’re not supposed to put hot pots on it. Or if you’re leaving something with a dark substance on it like red wine or beetroot, which we use a lot in our cuisine, if you don’t wipe it down straight away, it could possibly stain it,” Mrs Athanasiadis says, adding that the LQS team are always on call to respond to queries while their website also has more info available to lithostone newbies.

“On our website we have a video that shows you how to clean your surfaces by Effie from ‘Acropolis Now’,” Ms Athanasiadis says. “She shows you how to maintain it in good condition, she spills red wine on it, it’s actually quite good!”

When it comes to the most popular lithostone colour choices, white and grey seem to be winning people over. Additionally the material has become increasingly popular not just in residential areas but in commercial as well, providing a more professional sensation to business spaces.
