Turkish-Cypriot Trade Unionist Selma Eylem said that teachers in the occupied part of Cyprus are up in arms over the appointment of a teacher who was appointed on 25 October by the Turkish-Cypriot administration. She said that teacher’s are protesting attempts they feel that Turkey is making to impose ‘political Islam’ onto the Turkish Cypriot community.

Turkish Media reports that teachers at a high school in Lapithos/Lapta did not enter their classrooms as a sign of protest against the appointment of the teacher wearing the hijab.

It was unclear whether the appointment had been rescinded, however reports point to efforts made to accommodate the protesters.
