Kenyan runner John Kipkorir Komen, 42, won the 37th Authentic Marathon on Sunday after clocking 2 hours, 16 minutes and 34 seconds.

Running the Athens race for the second time, he passed Rwanda’s Felicien Muhitia just 600 metres before the end. Muhitia came second with a time of 2 hours, 16 minutes and 43 seconds, whereas Kostas Gelaouzos of Greece came third with a time of two hours, 19 minutes and two seconds. This is the third time that Gelaouzos has come in as the marathon’s fastest Greek.

Greek woman Elefterhia Petroulaki came in as the marathon’s fastest woman with a time of two hours, 45 minutes and 50 seconds – her best time ever and her second year as the top female athlete of the Athens Marathon. Ekaterini Assimakopoulou and Panagiota Tragaki came second and third in the women’s category.

Kenyan runners have dominated the Athens Marathon in recent years, coming in first except for 2003 and 2011 when runners from Tanzania and Morocco won respectively.
