Melbourne and Thessaloniki have been sister cities since 20 March 1984 when the former mayor of Thessaloniki Theocharis Manavis came to Melbourne to participate in the twinning ceremony that linked the Macedonian city to Victoria.

This year marked 35 years since the initiative was taken and a number of events were held to celebrate the links between the two cities.

Events culminated on Sunday with the Demetria Sister Cities Glendi held by the Thessaloniki Association ‘The White Tower’ together with the Pan Macedonian Association of Melbourne and Victoria.

Present at the event were Thessaloniki Union President Pavlos mavroudis, Pan Macedonian Association President Andreas Ballis, Greek Consul-General Dimitris Michalopoulos and Melbourne Mayor Sally Capp.
