Greek authorities at the time said there had been a long, protracted chase hen the smuggler’s boat had attempted to ram and sink the coast guard vessel, injuring one of the coast guard officials in the process.

Coast guard officials also said that they found 12 asylum seekers hidden on board the smuggler’s speed boat and that they had not been aware of their presence during their pursuit of the speedboat.
