Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has suggested an ingenious plan to help families and communities affected by the terrible fires raging throughout Australia in recent weeks.

The young star, 25, proposed on Twitter that Tennis Australia hold a charity event to raise funds for those affected by the bushfires.

Many world class tennis athletes are on Australian shores these days – including world top seed Rafael Nadal – in order to prepare for the first Grand Slam of the year that kicks off in Melbourne on 20 January, with Kyrgios suggesting that the officials could take advantage of that fact by holding a mini pre-tournament that would also serve as a warm-up for many of them, all while giving some highly necessary money to the communities that have been devastated by the bushfires.

Kyrgios’ idea was applauded with his Australian squad teammate, John Millman, calling it a “great shout” and Sky News presenter Chloe-Amanda Bailey adding that it would be “…flipping amazing!”

The young athlete has spent the past few days in Brisbane in preparation for the upcoming ATP Cup, where the Australian team has been paired in the same group as Greece’s wonderchild Stefanos Tsitsipas and Michalis Pervolarakis.

They will face each other next Tuesday (7 January).

When asked about his current condition, Kyrgios pointed out that he “…feels great”, adding that he’s looking forward to playing in front of the home crowd:

“I have had no injuries as of yet this year. I am feeling all right, I feel refreshed. I love being around the boys, I love the team environment. I do what I can to get the best out of these boys and I know I have their support – I just go out and bring good energy. And us Aussies we travel throughout the year. I was away for six and a half months (in 2019) so to be able to play in front of our home fans is awesome.”

Nick Kyrgios will be joined by Alex De Minaur in the upcoming ATP Cup, as they take on Greece, Germany and Canada in group F of the competition.
