Greek Australian tennis player Thanasi Kokkinakis announced his withdrawal from the Australian Open earlier today.

The 23-year-old world number 199 had no guarantee to be in the main draw and would have had to receive a wildcard or go through qualifying rounds.

“Unfortunately I’ve got some health concerns I need to take care of and will have to miss the Australian Open and Aussie summer,” Kokkinakis announced on Twitter without expanding on what the issue was.

“Shattered to miss my favourite part of the year but I have to look after myself first. Always appreciate the continued support.”

The news comes on the back of yet another tough year for the South Australian who has been struggling to fight a persistent pectoral injury that forced many withdrawals last year.

Kokkinakis hasn’t played since losing a Challenger tournament final in California back in September.
