The Greek community was well-represented on the Australia Day honours list this year, with at least 16 individuals of Greek background recognised for their outstanding service to the nation.

Among them was Queensland based Professor Anthony Cassimatis, who was named an honorary Member in the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant service to education and law, alongside recently appointed as Deputy Chairperson of the Victorian Multicultural Commission Maria Dimopoulos for her service to cultural diversity and the prevention of domestic violence, and Dr Paul Eliadis for his service to medicine as a haematologist and for his charitable initiatives.

CEO of Settlement Services International Violet Roumeliotis was conferred with the high distinction for her work in refugee support, while George Savvides whose career spans over 30 years in the Australian and New Zealand health care sector was recognised for his contributions in the world of philanthropy and business.

Seven Greek Australians were given Medals of the Order (OAM) of Australia in the General Division, including Barrister Thomas Frank Danos for his service to the law and the community, Peter George Doukas for his work championing multiculturalism in New South Wales and Victorian George Halvagis for his tireless efforts in assisting families of homicide victims to secure justice and his dedication to the not-for-profit organisation, Crime Stoppers Victoria.

Retired Major Terry Kanellos was recognised for his support towards veterans and their families, while Dr Stephen George Papas was awarded for his service in dentistry.

Melbourne resident Nenia Helen Tavrou also received a medal for her various undertakings benefiting the broader community and Father Christos Triantafyllou for his service towards the Greek Community of Belmore, NSW.

Finally, Eleftheria Zografos was recognised for her services towards the multicultural community of Queensland.

Penny Damianakis was awarded the Public Services Medal for her work in leading the provision of Centrelink services to vulnerable customers and volunteer communities, with Tina Filopoulos receiving the Australia Corrections Medal.

Additionally, Lieutenant Peter Asimakis of Queensland was among those to receive the coveted Conspicuous Service Medal of Australia for his meritorious achievement as a lead member of the Sea Training Unit Defence Cooperation Program.
