St John’s College has been overwhelmed by the generosity of the Greek community.

The Pan Cretan Association of Melbourne hosted the honorary name day dinner for His Eminence Archbishop Makarios last month, with a particular focus on St John’s.

On the night $50,000 was donated by the Pan Cretan Association towards the College’s Basketball Court Capital works project, which has been quoted at $200,000.

There were additional donations from Central Philoptochos ($2,000), the Greek Elderly Citizens Society of Melbourne ($1,000), St Nectarios Parish Fawkner ($10,000), St Panteleimon Parish Dandenong ($5,000) and Presentation of our Lord Coburg ($1,000).

Fr Vasilios Kourtesis from St Cyril and St Mathodius also donated a $2,000 scholarship in loving memory of his Presvytera. Details of the application process will be announced soon.

Additional donations were also made by individuals to the St John’s College Building Fund, which are yet to be counted.

Newly-appointed principal Anna Urban was in attendance along with other staff and school captains, Deanna, Michael and Kosta who delivered speeches on the night.

“I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to lead the College through this exciting new chapter,” Mrs Urban said. “It is a privilege to work with such a warm and committed community.”
